A real medical case, reported by Live Science and NewsNation in July 2026, describes a 36-year-old Massachusetts woman on a GLP-1 weight loss drug who developed a gastric bezoar, a hardened mass of undigested food. She drank roughly 1.5 liters of Diet Coke, and a follow-up endoscopy found the mass had dissolved. Using cola to dissolve these masses is a recognized medical technique, supported by a published systematic review that found it fully dissolves such masses in about half of cases. Two details in the viral version are off: the cola was a single scaled-down dose, not 1.5 liters a day, and doctors also stopped her GLP-1 medication and gave her another prescription, so soda was not the only treatment. This is also a single patient case, and the doctors themselves wrote that they do not understand why cola works.
